Chapter 21: Wounds Of A Friend
So, in this chapter Curt Owens (COw) and his new extra-terrestrial BFFs do manage to help one victim of the bombing. One. Victim. In the entire city of Springfield, MO.
They find the town beggar, Lame John, lying in the wreckage of Chuck Carson’s Barbershop. He is gravely injured and his leg has been blown off. (Is it his good leg that has been blown off? Or his lame leg? We don’t know. Why am I even asking? Why do I care?) Doeron pours green alien powder on him, and that heals his wounds and stops the bleeding, but he is still going to die of blood loss. Always willing to help, Diokousi runs back to the Survivor to retrieve something called the Rawpaner (??) that will save Lame John’s life. While Diokousi is doing that, Wesley, Curt Owens (COw), Doeron, and Eurisko all pray. And... not only does Lame John live, but his leg reappears, AND he isn’t lame anymore! Wesley tells him “The Lord Most Holy healed you.”
But what about Diokousi? Well, he’s being a total traitorous liar-pants (just like I predicted a few chapters ago). He didn’t go to get the Rawpaner... He went to get the Survivor to kill them all!
In an action-packed sequence, Diokousi flies the Survivor above our heroes and starts firing plasma disruptions at them. The postman runs out of the post office and starts shooting at the Survivor with an RPG launcher, but Diokousi shoots the postman dead. Wesley throws the Sword of the Lord at the Survivor like a spear, and this causes the ship to come crashing down. The sword of the Lord returns to Wesley like a boomerang.
The police arrive at the scene and start running toward around, trying to arrest whoever. Diokousi comes out of the ship and starts shooting at everyone. Doeron the Last Android attacks the traitorous Diokousi and loses an arm. They wrestle around and Diokousi smiles evilly. Wesley tells Diokousi to put his gun down and has the Sword of the Lord aimed at Diokousi’s head. It’s a total clusterfuck! Just imagine the ending of Reservoir Dogs, basically. Meanwhile, the cops are still running around, trying to arrest whoever.
Suddenly... Diokousi is lying limp on the ground. No one killed him. He wasn’t injured that I know of. He just... died. Of... I don’t know what? I read over this part several times and I don’t know how he died. The characters in the book are also confused. Even Wesley has no idea how he died. I’m assuming COW himself is confused. And Doeron says it appears to be “severe head trauma” and Doeron seems confused??? Okay...
Anyway, they grab Diokousi’s body and Doeron grabs his severed arm and they run back into the ship before the cops can take them to the slammer. Doeron dies of his injuries because he is an old android and his energy is too low. As he is dying, he tells Wesley that his memory core contains all of Wesley’s father’s thoughts and memories. He gives Wesley the memory core and says that Wesley has ten days... no, actually eight days before the memories are lost forever. The recordings will fade after eight days...
