Chapter 24: The Alliance For Peace And Godliness

Mr. Owens goes to Washington. His cohort meets with the leaders of the United States, Mexico, Canada, the “Confederation of Central America,” and, for some reason, Israel. Presumably Israel is included so as to have the two holy cities (Branson and Jerusalem) present. Were these countries allied in the current war? Perhaps, though wasn’t Europe involved as well? This is a question that would involve going back in the book to research, a risk I am not willing to take.

The world leaders would like to partner with the Plenarians to help fight the Hamartians. It is easy to see what the Terrestrials would get from the arrangement—not being extinguished. But what exactly do the Plenarians stand to gain? It has been shown that earth tech is outdated by a few centuries, so military assistance isn’t the goal. In a shocking twist, we find out that Wesley isn’t the sinless prince we all thought he was! Wesley goes to the dark side. (Perhaps that metaphor is stealing too much from popular science fiction, but I think it’s okay. The truth of the universe doesn’t seem to care about originality.)

In exchange for his assistance, Wesley demands that the world powers change their constitutions to outlaw abortion, homosexuality, and pornography! The world leaders are in no place to bargain, so they submit to the bullying of the Prince of Plenarius.

Now, before you go and apostatize yourself, let’s think about what the true message is here. It is our duty as non-cult members to try and understand what COW is trying to teach us.

The fact that abortion, homosexuality, and pornography are outlawed is confusing at first glance. It seems that God would be able to use people regardless of what they do in their sexual lives. But COW gives us a clue. “The Great Earth Revival came about five years after this meeting with the President.” This hint makes it obvious what is going on. These next five years of bigotry, fanaticism, and judgmentalism are a test. As gays, incest victims, and college boys are all driven underground, a movement is growing. The true believers must develop their community in hiding, just as the secret cities on Plenarius grew for hundreds of years. And in just five years, they will make their message of love and tolerance heard, bringing about the Great Earth Revival (more formally known as the Great Earth Revival of Aborters, Homosexuals, and Pornographers). These unfortunate laws will finally be repealed and replaced.

Meanwhile, Earth needs saved from the Hamartians. And in this fantastically-written passage, we true believers are given a second message. We see that God can even use such flawed characters like Wesley. Even those who force their standards on others are not unusable. For though we see a warning of a path not to follow, we are given the encouragement that no matter how far you have fallen, you can still play a part for good.

It may seem complicated, but it is…

THE TRUTH OF OUR UNIVERSE
